Kitzsteinhorn - Maiskogel - Kaprun Ski Resort

From 2 becomes 1: With the new K-onnection Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn are connected from season 2019/2020. More than 70 continuous kilometres of pistes await winter sports enthusiasts on the two mountains. While beginners feel particularly at home on the many blue pistes at Maiskogel, experts get their money's worth on the steeper glacier pistes.

The highlight among the lifts is the new tri-cable gondola with all-round glazed panorama cabins that can accommodate up to 32 people. Thanks to the new ropeway connection, ski-in-ski-out from Kaprun to the glacier is now possible. For day-trippers and all those who want to quickly reach the glacier skiing area, we recommend the usual entrance at the valley station of the Glacier Jet.

Kitzsteinhorn: The glacier ski area

The Kitzsteinhorn is the only glacier ski area in the Salzburger Land and offers pure skiing pleasure from October to July. In total there are more than 40 prepared kilometres of slopes to explore, more than half of them marked in red. The "Gletscherseeabfahrt" is one of the best ways to enjoy carving with a great panorama. The Kristallbahn run will also appeal to sporty skiers. If you like it steep, you should definitely stop by on the black "Black Mamba" with 63 percent gradient.

Professionals on the boards are attracted to the Kitzsteinhorn above all because of the grandiose freeride offer, because it belongs to the most popular freeride areas in the Alps. In the immediate vicinity of the lifts there are five routes with different levels of difficulty, for example the medium pipe line, which is not very long, but quite humpy and thus requires an extra portion of balance. A real challenge is the Jump Run. This is nothing for weak nerves and especially among the locals extremely popular. If you want to look for your own lines, you can first inform yourself in the Freeride Info Base between the Glacier Jet II and the Langwiedbahn.

The three snowparks offer an extra dose of adrenalin. In the Glacier Park at 2900 metres, one can already stand the first tricks from October. All playgrounds are freshly shaped every day and inspire beginners as well as pro riders with varied easy-, medium- and pro-lines.

Maiskogel: The family mountain

The ski area on the Maiskogel offers visitors winter sports fun on 20 kilometres of slopes from December to March. Especially families feel at home here, the two thirds of the slopes are marked blue and there are practice lifts for beginners as well as at the Lechnerberg. With the new Maiskogel lift there is also a modern, fast gondola lift and in the new Kaprun-Center there is a huge ski depot as well as a rental station.

The Fantasy Park on the Maisilift is great fun for the whole family. Here you can find rails, kickers and wave tracks, which are complemented with funny animal figures. The Maiskogel is also home to the Maisiflitzer, an Alpine coaster that is in operation all year round.

Salzburg's only glacier is the perfect place for skiing from October to July. If Mother Hulda doesn't help, 65 percent of the slopes in the entire ski area can be covered with snow.

On both the Kitzsteinhorn and the Maiskogel, numerous restaurants and huts spoil you with a wide range of culinary delights. Whether typically Austrian, trendy and innovative or atmospheric - from breakfast to après-ski there is something for everyone. Of course, large sun terraces are also a must. In many mountain huts there are extra children's menus for the little ski stars.

A special challenge awaits experts at the Kitzsteinhorn: The "Black Mamba", a slope up to 63% steep! The black run with the no. 14 is 1000 meters long, overcomes 290 meters of altitude and a really poisonous slope - ideal for all who want to get steep! The start of the run is at the valley station of the Kristallbahn at 2,265 metres, the finish at Langwiedboden.

Exceptionally long runs there are several in the ski area: If you change from the Alpincenter downhill run to the Langwied run on the Kitzsteinhorn, you can ski from the summit to Langwiedboden and enjoy a 5km downhill run. Even longer is the blue valley descent at Maiskogel, which leads from the mountain station of the Almbahn to Kaprun.

Highlights away from the ski slopes there are numerous in the ski area. Families should not miss the Maisiflitzer at Maiskogel. Safely guided on rails, the two-seater rushes down into the valley at speeds of up to 40 km/h. Built-in waves, jumps and five spinning tops provide additional thrills. Start and finish of the run are directly at the parking lot Schaufelberg at Kaprun Center.

A visit to the Summit world 3000 at the Kitzsteinhorn is highly recommended for all age groups: High up on 3000 meters the summit world combines several attractions: Once at the top, you enter a 360 metre long tunnel that leads through the Kitztsteinhorn. On the way you will learn all kinds of interesting facts about the mountain world of the Hohe Tauern. At the end of the tunnel you enter the Panorama Platform "Top of Salzburg". And you can even go to the cinema up at the glacier! In Cinema 3000 you can see spectacular pictures of the landscape and wildlife around the Kitzsteinhorn.

The Ice Camp, which consists of three interconnected igloos and accommodates a bar and an ice art production is also an impressive work of art.

For cross-country skiers there are over 60 km of trails in the region Zell am See - Kaprun. There is also a high altitude trail on the Kitzsteinhorn and three different night trails.

The Häuslalm at Langwiedboden is the first address on the glacier for après-ski. Further possibilities at the Kitzsteinhorn are the Skyline Bar and the Parasol Schirmbar at the Alpincenter, the kitz900m and the Ice Camp Bar.

There are also several possibilities for après-ski on the Maiskogel: the Eisbär Après-Ski-Bar is located on the mountain. In the valley can be made daily until 20 o'clock in the Maisi Alm party. Who would like to celebrate afterwards still further, finds in cell at the lake and Kaprun numerous pubs, bars and Discotheken.

At 3029 metres in Summit restaurant twice a year, real gourmet chefs spoil their guests under the motto "Hochgenuss". In Kaprun there is also a large selection of other restaurants. 

By car
Kaprun is around 2 1/2 hours from Munich. To make the journey by road, take the A 8 towards Salzburg, then keep right at the Inntal junction and follow signs for the A 93. Leave this road at the Oberaudorf exit and continue on towards Niederaudorf, following the B 178 until you reach Kaprun.

By train
Zell am See is also conveniently accessible by rail. Free buses take skiers and snowboarders from the train to the valley station of the lifts free-of-charge.

By plane
The nearest airport is in Salzburg. Various shuttle services offer skiers who fly in ideal access to the Kitzsteinhorn.
