The Cross-Country Area
The natural reserve Tierra Mayor is beautifully situated about 20 kilometres outside of Ushuaia. During the Argeninian winter months (July to October), it is home to a 21km/13mi long cross-country ski trail. The tracks go past streams and rivers as well as over moors and through various winter sports centres in the valley. The grooming varies. Ski rentals and ski schools are available.
A large cross-country tournament, Marcha Blanca, takes place here every August, with participants skiing 50km/31mi.
Right by the entry at Centro Invernal Tierra Mayor, you can find a restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat. This is also the starting point of snow-shoe hikes, dog-sleigh runs and snow cat rides. The winter sports centres along the tracks also feature the odd restaurant or snack bar.
Interesting facts
- The highest point of the track is 249 m above sea level.
- Snow coverage is usually best during September, offering an average snow depth of 126 cm at summit elevation and 41 cm at the base.
