A lot fewer black diamond runs than at other resorts in Colorado!

With Vail, Aspen and Beaver Creek, Colorado has some of the most challenging ski resorts in the world. Durango Mountain Resort in the southern part of the state is not one of them. Durango has established itself as a loyal family resort. And though with Styx (Purgatory Village Express lift), Bull Run (Grizzly lift) and Elliot's (Legends lift), it does have some black diamonds to offer, it simply can't compete with the other ski areas in the north, some of which have reserved entire sections of their mountains for freeriding. A further disadvantage for Durango Purgatory is the fact that the entire ski area lies below the tree line. So, though you will find a few tree skiing trails, you won't find a single open powder slope. Conclusion: Durango Mountain Resort is great for expert skiers only planning on staying for a single day, but if it's a week-long ski trip you're planning, you're better off heading to Telluride or Vail.
