The Ski Resort
Beijing will host the Winter Olympics in February 2022. For this occasion, the winter sports infrastructure throughout China has been massively expanded. New ski areas have been built and existing ones have been enlarged.
The Olympic ski races will take place at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Centre. It is located 75 kilometres northwest of Beijing's city centre and was completely rebuilt in the mountainous region of Xiaohaituo. An existing nature reserve was reduced in size for this purpose.
25 kilometres of slopes await winter sports enthusiasts here, mainly in the red and black categories. Since the area in Yanqing only has an annual average of five centimetres of new snow, artificial snow is produced with numerous snow-making machines.
Nine modern lifts were built by the Austrian company Doppelmayr, including five 8-seater gondola lifts, two 6-seater chair lifts and two 4-seater chair lifts. In addition, the new Olympic bobsleigh run, an Olympic village and a media centre were built nearby.
It has not yet been decided whether and when the ski area will be opened to the public after the Games. However, the facility will probably be used for international competitions and the training of athletes.
