It should be said that the journey to Zermatt is not altogether straightforward. While most people are used to driving right up to their hotel in the car in other destinations, guests in Zermatt have to leave their car at the car park in Täsch and then travel the last leg to Zermatt by train or taxi. We can warmly recommend travelling to Zermatt with the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. Snow-Online.com has already tested Zermatt five times. With every new test, we discovered new ideas that have been implemented in Zermatt in an effort to make visitors’ stays and inbound travel more pleasant. Now, you can conveniently leave your car in the underground car park in Täsch, load your luggage onto a free luggage trolley (5 CHF deposit – as of February 2016 – refunded on return) and get picked up by your hotel team in an electric taxi directly at the main station. The train ride is without doubt a real spectacle, and you quickly forget any inconvenience.
The Zermatter Bergbahnen and hotel services also hold up over multiple tests
As already mentioned, our team has had the opportunity to put Zermatt to the test on multiple occasions. The grooming standard of the runs has always been outstanding. Crossing the Theodul Glacier over onto the Italian side is not always possible due to the high Alpine situation and the sometimes strong winds. But here in particular, it is also important that the lift operators put the safety of guests first and sometimes keep specific lifts closed. In our tests, the crossing over into Italy was only closed once due to strong winds. But even in this case, we were still able to enjoy perfect conditions on the slopes despite overnight snowfall. With 360 kilometres of trails, the grooming teams in Breuil-Cervinia, Valtournenche and Zermatt do an incredible job at ensuring great conditions no matter the weather.
A word about the lifts
Guests can also rest assured that they will enjoy the utmost convenience in Zermatt when it comes to riding lifts. Although there are still some surface lifts (T-bar lifts) in use on the Theodul Glacier, this is due to the glacial nature of the ground. The movement of the glacier only makes it partially possible to install chairlifts, the support pylons of which require fixed ground. Otherwise, the gondolas and chairlifts are all of a top-notch technical standard and a journey with the Gornergrat cog railway is a truly unforgettable experience.
