Head belongs to HTM (Head, Tyrolia, Mares) Sports GmbH and is based in the Austrian town of Schwechat. HEAD Ski COMPANY INC. was founded by the American Howard Head in 1950. Aviation engineer Head was frustrated by the cumbersome and inflexible wooden skis available at the time and went on to develop the first “metal sandwich construction” skis.
Head skis are today produced in Kennelbach, Austria, and Budweis, Czech Republic. The product range encompasses racing skis, all-mountain and big-mountain models, women’s skis and children’s skis. Bindings, boots and snowboard equipment are also fixtures in the Head catalogue. In addition to winter sports, Head produces tennis, squash, badminton and racquetball racquets. The group also owns Tyrolia, a company that has produced ski bindings since 1928, as well as the Italian diving equipment manufacturer Mares.
