The Biathlon World Cup 2016/2017 kicks off in Östersund (Sweden) on Sunday 27 November 2016 with mixed relay events. Over the course of the season, competitors will have to tackle no less than 56 different competitions to decide who gets to take home the sought-after World Cup trophy at the end of the year.

Most of the favourites are the usual suspects. In the men’s events, look no further than serial winners Martin Fourcade (France), Johannes Thingnes Boe (Norway) and Anton Shipulin (Russia) for the overall World Cup title. Though oldie Ole Einar Björndalen (Norway), Tarjei Boe (Norway) and Simon Schempp (Germany) will also do their best to ensure an upset.

Among the ladies, Gabriela Koukalová (Czech Republic), Marie Dorin Habert (France) and Dorothea Wierer (Italy) are the clear favourites for the overall World Cup title. Laura Dahlmeier (Germany), Tiril Eckhoff (Norway), Tora Berger (Norway) and Kaisa Mäkäräinen (Finland) are also considered dark horses.

Another highlight to look forward to this winter is the Biathlon World Championships from 8 – 19 February 2017 in Hochfilzen (Austria). It is worth noting, however, that the World Championship results do not count towards the overall World Cup standings.

This year’s World Cup includes three new locations on its tour. In Pyeongchang (South Korea), competitors can gain a first impression of what to expect for the Winter Olympic Games 2016.

Nove Mesto (Czech Republic) also returns to the calendar. The town in the Vysočina region already hosted World Cup events in 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2014/2015. The Biathlon World Championships were also held in Nove Mesto in 2013.

Oberhof (Germany) is another destination back on the World Cup tour. This venerable resort in the heart of Germany had to sit out last year’s season due to a lack of snow. A second World Cup event was held in Ruhpolding instead.
