In Lech Zürs am Arlberg, winter sports enthusiasts can expect two new lifts in the upcoming ski season. Both the lift on the Madloch-Joch and the Zugerberg will be replaced by modern facilities. After more than 50 years, the two double chairlifts will become a 6-seater chairlift and a 10-seater gondola. Thus, two important connecting lifts between Lech, Zürs and Zug will be modernized and also the two legendary ski circuits "Run of Fame" and "The White Ring" will be significantly upgraded.
10-seater gondola lift on the Zugerberg
From winter 2021/2022, instead of the old 2-seater chairlift, a comfortable 10-seater gondola lift with panoramic windows will take guests up to the Balmalp in Zug.The new lift will halve the journey time up to 2,105 meters to less than five minutes. In addition to the speed, the transport capacity will also almost double. The capacity of the new lift is 2,400 people per hour.
"With the new Zugerberg lift, an important bottleneck for the White Ring has been brought up to the highest technical standard, and thanks to the perfect timing with the Madloch lift, which is also new, queuing times can now be effectively avoided," says Christoph Pfefferkorn, Commercial Director of Skilifte Lech, explaining the advantages of the new facilities.
In order to have as little impact as possible on the landscape, the top station of the Zugerberg cable car and the gondola depot at the base station are underground. In addition, two new houses for employees are being built at the bottom station.
There will also be direct underground access to the Balmalp from the top station. This means that guests will be able to reach the ski hut dry-footed from the gondola lift via an escalator. Due to the night-time operating licence for the ski lift, events will also be possible at the Balmalp in the evening in the future.
6-seater chairlift at Madloch-Joch
The old double chairlift at the Madloch-Joch in Zürs is also being replaced by a more modern installation. The comfortable 6-seater chairs of the new Madloch lift are equipped with seat heating and weather protection hoods. The high-speed lift also halves the journey time to just five minutes. A special feature of the new lift are the weather protection hoods. These will feature the winners of the "White Ring" ski race.
The bottom station will be relocated for the new lift. In the future, it will be situated on the opposite side of Lake Zürs. This will facilitate access to the lift and alleviate a bottleneck. The avalanche protection system at the top station will also be further expanded. The two new station buildings will be roofed over with modern glass and steel structures.
Facts and figures on the new railways
Construction work on the two lifts in Lech Zürs will start in summer and is scheduled for completion by the beginning of December 2021. Winter sports enthusiasts will therefore already be able to use the new facilities in the upcoming 2021/2022 season. Above all, ambitious skiers who want to complete the legendary "White Ring" or the "Run of Fame", one of the largest ski circuits in the Alps, will be delighted with the new facilities.
