The Allgäu in the southwest of Bavaria extends itself all the way into Baden-Württemberg and Austria. It is one of the most beautiful regions of Bavaria. The mountains and lakes of the Allgäu form a unique and stunning landscape. Winter sport enthusiasts will find many ski resorts in the Allgäu Alps and the surrounding area. The most famous ski resort is Oberstdorf, which was the location for the kickoff of the Four Hill Tournament. The ski area Fellhorn Kanzelwand transcends borders reaching all the way into Austria. Perfectly groomed pistes and great panoramic views is what you will find in the area of Hörnerdörfer with wonderful ski resorts such as Bolsterlang, Balderschwang and Ofterschwang. In addition there are many more smaller ski areas such as Grünten or the Mittag Skicenter. Families and beginners prefer the more easy and manageable ski resorts.
In the Allgäu you will experience a feeling of what it means to be in the Alps. Apart from the impressive mountains the alpine feeling will intensify with the local cuisine. The Allgäu cheese is used in the most different dishes. Very famous are indeed the Allgäu “Kässpatzen” (soft egg noodles with cheese). The deserts are also worth it. You should definitely not miss out on the Allgäu version of “Kaiserschmarrn” (shredded pancake) called “Kratzat” or the fried “Nonnenfürzle” (desert pastry with sugar).
