Biathlon World Cup 2021/2022: Dates and Venues

Many ghost scenes, Corona failures and Olympic worries: The 2021/2022 biathlon season was turbulent and strongly marked by the pandemic. We have taken a look at the course of the Olympic season and listed all the dates with results directly afterwards.

Almost 70 races in 10 World Cup venues were on the programme for the biathletes in the winter of 2021/2022. Originally there would have been as many as 11 venues, but the IBU decided early on to make a first change. The March World Cup in Minsk (Belarus) was cancelled due to the political situation and instead was held in Kontiolahti, where the season was supposed to start in November.

The 2021 season kicked off with a double weekend in Östersund. After that, two more World Cup venues were scheduled in December: Hochfilzen in Tyrol and Le Grand Bornand in France. The World Team Challenge planned for the Christmas break was not held in the stadium at Schalke but again outdoors in Ruhpolding.

In January, the World Cup team went on to Oberhof, Ruhpolding and Antholz, the three most popular World Cup venues. The highlight of the season was the Winter Olympics in February 2022 near Beijing. After the dress rehearsal at the World Cup there was cancelled, both the courses and the shooting range at the Zhanjiakou National Biathlon Centre were new territory for the athletes.

In addition to Kontiolahti, there was also a premiere in March: Otepää in Estonia hosted a Biathlon World Cup race for the first time. The crowning finale with the awarding of the crystal globes was held again at Holmenkollen in Oslo, Norway, after a two-year break due to Corona. Due to the war, the biathletes from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus did not take part at the last three venues.
