Family friendly terrain only in the lower part of the ski resort!
While the Southern Island attracts many visitors from abroad, Turoa and Whakapapa are clearly destinations for mostly locals. Consequently many families with small kids can be seen in Whakapapa. In the lower area of the ski resort (up to the mountain station of the “Centennial Chair” (J) and the “Rockgarden Chair” (H) a lot of family friendly, gentle terrain is to be found. Unfortunately we can only recommend the intermediate trails in the upper and western parts of the ski resort (at the “West Ridge Quand (B) ) for families with kids that have had sufficient practice on ski or board. If parents want to spend the ski day together with their offspring we recommend to purchase the reduced ticket for the “Lower Mountain” area only. The better alternative however is to hand the kids over into the hands of professionals at the “Snow School” which is located right above the “Ticket Office”. There are offers for all ability levels that range from absolute beginner packages, single or group lessons to the “Discover Skiing” package.
