The state Salzburg has a range of 7154 km2 (2762 mi2). In the north it borders Bavaria, in the south the 150 kilometer (93 mi) long main ridge of the Hohen Tauern marks the border to the neighboring provinces of Carinthia and Tyrol. In the Venediger Group of the Hohen Tauern you will find the highest mountain of Salzburg, the Großvenediger. With 3,666 m (12,028 ft) above sea level it is the fourth highest mountain in all of Austria.
For skiers and for snowboarders there are 22 ski regions with a total of 2550 kilometers of slopes (1584 mi). 760 kilometers (472 mi) alone belong to the Ski Association Ski amadé including the areas of Flachau, Schladming and Hochkönig. The combination of a wide range of winter sport activities and easy access is what makes Salzburg so wildly popular. Driving on the A8 Munich-Salzburg you can reach skiing heaven from Bavaria in less than two hours. If you are traveling from further away, you can take a plane to the International Airport of Salzburg. From there you will find the ski resorts fairly close to you by shuttle or taxi.
